Study Programs

The University of Vienna offers several opportunities to study the history of science. These range from master's programs in Epistemologies of Science and Technology and History to the Doctoral Programme. We give out small grants to MA and PhD students to research topics that fall within our remit. Students interested in the history of science are invited to join the newsletter of the EST Master programme. Master Programme

Epistemologies of Science and Technology (EST)

The master’s programme Epistemologies of Science and Technology (EST) aims to educate students on reflecting critically and action guidenly upon the challenges of the 21st century with its scientific and technical conveyed upheavals. The Programme is a collaboration between history of science, philosophy of science and technology and social science research into science and technology. The course offer enables students to acquire expertise and methodological competences of all three areas, as well as to gain a multiperspective understanding of the common research subjects. Innovative research combinations and original specialisations are brought forth by an individual focus, deepening of the matter and the opportunity to attend studies of other disciplines.

Master Programme

History with a specialisation in the History of Science

In the Master's program in History, you can take a variety of courses in the History of Science. If you earn more than 30 ECTS credits, a specialization in history of science will be recognized.

Traditionally, our students are social scientists, natural scientists, archaeologists or economists, as well as prospective teachers who want to teach the tools of modern technology, or people with a professional background who are interested in the history of certain disciplines. Students of global studies, science and technology studies, and cultural and social anthropology also attend our seminars.

PHD

Doctoral School of Historical and Cultural Studies

The Doctoral School of Historical and Cultural Studies, founded in 2020, is one of the largest Vienna Doctoral Schools at the University of Vienna. Its doctoral program intends to provide a cutting-edge scientific training for doctoral candidates in all fields of historical and cultural studies. The DSHCS aims at attracting excellent students from all over the world and guides them them towards research at the forefront of historical and cultural studies in a vibrant and dynamic community in the heart of Europe. 

Our PhD students are normally part of the Research Clusters "State, Politics and Governance" or "Social and Economic Spaces". You can find lists of potential supervisors here.
