Science in the Metropolis: Vienna in Transnational Context 1848-1918 (Routledge 2021), edited by Mitchell G. Ash.

After a brief introduction to the volume by the editor, comments follow by
Dorothee Brantz, Professor and Director at the Center for Metropolitan Studies, Technical University Berlin, and Oliver Hochadel, historian of science and tenured researcher at CSIC Barcelona,
followed by Q and A from the audience.
The discussion will be moderated by Jan Surman (Prague).
„Science in the Metropolis“ presents new research on spaces for science and processes of interurban and transnational knowledge transfer and exchange in the imperial metropolis of Vienna in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Chapters discuss Habsburg science policy, metropolitan natural history museums, large technical projects including the Ringstraße and water pipelines from the Alps, urban geology, geography in Vienna and Berlin, public reports on polar exploration, exchanges of ethnographic objects, popular scientific societies and scientifically oriented adult education. The infrastructures and knowledge spaces described here were preconditions fort he explosion of creativity widely know as „Vienna 1900“.
